4:55 pm - Tim Morehouse Silver medalist
ro_20 I came across this article on Uwemp.Com about what Tim has done since the Olympics:
www.uwemp.com/articles/sports/success-tim-morehouse-olympic-fencer.  Another cool thing was that I was able to send a message directly to the author.  All I had to do for that was register and click on the ask author link on the bottom.

7:01 pm - Adieu Coach! Adieu!

I and the rest of my fencing group learned that our fencing instructor passed away today.  We don't know when or how, but we are all severely saddened by his passing.

We're gathering tomorrow during the club's regular hours to commemorate him (we plan on attending or doing something for the services if it's in our area- he moved to WA state, we're in CA).  It'll mostly be fencers having a go at each other...and likely to end with booze and lots of somber staring into our vessels of drink.

We really miss that man.

Has anyone tried the blue gauntlet saber lame for $87? Does anyone know anything about it- is it any good?
I don't require fie standards, I'm just looking for something that will register touches.

Thanks in advance for any info.

10:40 pm - Anyone want a new icon?

I just made a LJ icon because I saw the quote - My fandom plays with swords. - somewhere. I'm posting it here in case anyone wants to steal it and use it to their heart's content. Credit would be nice, but is not necessary. Enjoy.

2:01 pm - Fencing Clinc with Zagunis & Jacobson (12/3 in Livonia, MI)

Hi all:

I thought those of you who might live (somewhat) in the area would be interested in this.

Greetings fencers. On December 3rd (Wednesday) there will be a fencing clinic at SdE with Mariel Zagunis and Sada Jacobson. They are two of our fencers from the US Sabre fencing team that took bronze at the 2008 Olympics and the Gold and Silver medalists in the Women's Sabre Event. The clinic will run from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. The cost is $20/person.

They will be giving a brief talk, a demo and then do some work with the attending fencers. So bring your gear.

Any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Salle d'Etroit, LLC

The website noted in the email has location info and directions. The turn from Amrhein Rd is sort of ambigious, but they usually stick up a little lawn sign with an arrow at the drive that you turn into.

Hope to see you there!

8:10 pm - Shoes

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a nice pair of fencing shoes with a lot of GRIP. I recently got a pair of Adidas Nenyan shoes, and even though I haven't fenced in them I don't think I'll like them because of the lack of ankle support.

And I don't want actual fencing shoes because they tend to be expensive. I want something up to 60 bucks. Suggestions?

8:45 pm - Upcoming tournament

Hey all!  Randomly just wondering if anyone is going to the Remenyik Open at Northwestern University October 24-26.  I was just curious if any of you were competing/coaching/spectating.

12:18 am - Foil Lame Shopping Help

I'm presently in the market for a foil lame. I've been using our club's Allstar on and off for quite a while and, well, they would like it back.
I'm interested in others' experiences to use as a bit of a guide.
I'm looking for something of pretty high quality, and my budget cap is USD$200. My main concerns are durability and oxidation rate (I sweat quite a bit), as it will get quite a bit of use. Lightness isn't exceptionally high on my list, but would be a nice bonus. Also, the allstar tending to shred my jacket up a bit under the arm, another complaint I have with it.
I'm presently leaning in the direction of the following.

Triplette Super Duty - 5-7 is a nice claim, but I have doubts
An Allstar to replace the one I was using (albeit this was a bit hot, and the neck did oxidize to a lovely greenish patina)
Leon Paul's base model
Swordmaster Estoc - although I don't see an advantage of this over the Triplette super duty
PBT Inox

So, basically, can anyone offer any words of wisdom, lames to avoid, ones i may have overlooked, any of that jazz? It would be greatly appreciated.

Exciting sabre action going on right now. The U.S. men's team sabre just defeated Russia in the semifinals. Next it's the U.S. vs. France for the gold!

Anyone see Germany's Ben Kleibrink downing a 1 litre Coca-Cola between periods in his round of 16 match?

That was...

(sorry, couldn't resist--seriously though, it was an interesting sight at 1 a.m. or so in the morning)

11:56 am - Women's sabre results

The US just swept all the medals with Rebecca Ward taking bronze, Sada Jacobson getting silver and Mariel Zagunis defending her gold from 2004. Not only was it a great achievement for the US, but the gold metal bout was absolutely beautiful to watch.

1:40 pm - Just wanted to say "Hi"

And maybe a quick question: Is this community exclusively for Western fencing or a practitioner of Japanese fencing may join as well? ;)

I live in Poland, near Warsaw, I'm 26 years old and I practice kashima-shin-ryu kenjutsu for about five years, though recently I has a long break. I hope this community will help me to motivate myself more. I don't attend any club right now due to lack of time but I plan to go back to my old fencing club next year. And there's always a yard outside my house where I can practice techniques with my imaginary friend ;)

So, just wanted to say "Hi".

I'm having trouble finding what stations in the U.S. (if any... :( ) are going to be showing Olympic fencing in August. Last time it was Bravo (I think). Anyone have the scoop?
